Lucky enough to be off on a city break this autumn? Take a look at our list of handy packing tips to keep you well-dressed and prepared for anything.

Autumn can be a lovely time of year to explore a new city. It’s not too hot to be walking around a new place, discovering a bit of culture and enjoying the shops and local delicacies. If you're heading off on a city break soon then you can expect to be strolling through autumn leaves as well as striding down the city streets. Here’s an idea of what you should be packing before you head off on your city break in the autumn.

A Coat That Goes with Everything

If you're packing for a weekend away, you don’t really want to be packing more than one bulky coat. Take one that will go with all your chosen outfits and is light enough to layer up with other clothes if it does get chilly. Ideally you will want one that can take you from day to night- one that you can wear to shops and museums during the day, and also out to dinner and drinks in the evening.

Prepare for All Weathers

Depending on where you are jetting off to, you may need to prepare for all weathers. It may be that a light jacket is enough but be prepared for colder weather and even rain. Be sure to pack an umbrella so you don’t get caught out — a small one that can slip into your handbag is fine. Also, pack a warm hat and scarf in case it gets cold. This Barbour women's Rosewood Dover hat and Hailes scarf set is perfect for an autumnal break away and can offer some neutral sophistication to any outfit. Don’t forget to pack thick socks or tights, especially if you are going to be walking and exploring a lot.

Comfy Boots

If you are going to be walking a lot, then comfy boots are a must. Make sure they are well broken in so that you don’t have to worry about blisters. If they are waterproof, even better. You won’t have to be worrying about cold, wet feet if you do have a downpour. Again, if they can take you from day to night then you don’t have to think about getting changed before going out to dinner after a day exploring the city.

Layer Up

If you're not entirely sure what the weather will be like whilst on your city break, it is a good idea to plan outfits that layer up well so that if it's chillier than expected, you can throw on a fleece or sweater under your coat - or if it is unseasonably warm, you can take a layer off. If you're taking long sleeved dresses, then also pack some knitted cardigans or shirts to put over them. Take a mixture of short sleeve t-shirts, shirts and sweaters. That way, if you need to take a sweater off, you will still have a nice top underneath. A thin rain mac that you can throw in a bag may be a good idea too. If it gets really cold, then thermal base layers are a great idea.

If you are lucky enough to be jetting off on a city getaway this autumn, make sure you are prepared for all weathers, pack layers, and enjoy exploring in some comfy boots.
